Cheese Grits
This recipe was created by Monger Alex on a chilly, windy day. Nothing better than super creamy, cheesy grits to warm your soul…. We particularly love Marsh Hen Grits, a Southern brand created by miller Greg Johnsman. Marsh Hen Mill sits on Edisto Island, an historically rich South Carolina Sea Island. Originally occupied by Native American Edisto tribe, members of the Cusabo Indigenous peoples, the Spanish Jesuits influenced the culture on the island from the mid-1500s. By 1674, the English had taken over and created an economy based on rice, indigo and cotton plantation farming. Following the Civil War, freed black slaves made Edisto Island an even more important hub for American history, as independent farming and property ownership became the norm for local African-Americans. Known as the The Gullah Geechee, these African descendants maintained strong African cultural traditions, including a distinct Creole language, unique foodways, arts (like sweetgrass baskets), and spiritual, musical, and folklore traditions.
